My feelings

Staying in Liverpool brings lots of new experience to me. The weather in Liverpool is changeable. Last weekend, the weather suddenly became very bad, with rain and biting wind, which made me feeling cold and wet as I could not open my umbrella under strong wind. However, the weather became normal on weekdays. Besides, it is quite difficult for me to find a restaurant that matches my favour.

Renewable energy

Green energy will not replace fossil fuels.

First, using renewable energy has many geographical restrictions while using fossil fuels do not have any barriers in geographical aspect. Renewable energy can only generate electricity effectively in certain environmental conditions. For example, tidal energy can be used when there are places with great tidal change throughout the day. Hydroelectric power can generate power when there are wide and deep valley, together with continuous supply of river flow in the entire year. However, fossil fuels can be burnt to provide energy when there is just a power station. It is much easier to construct a power plant rather than finding a place to match the geographical conditions to develop renewable energy. Therefore, fossil fuels will definitely replace renewable energy.

Second, developing renewable energy is much more pricey than burning fossil fuels to provide electricity. Buying equipment, e.g. solar panels, to generate solar energy, or constructing facilities, such as dam and turbines, to generate hydroelectric power are not cheap. These often costs phenomenal sums of money in order to satisfy the needs of electricity for all of us around the world. Despite renewable energy is a kind of green energy, most countries, especially the less developed countries, do not have enough capital to develop non-polluting energy. Thus most of the nations think that it is not worth to spend a massive amount of money to generate green energy. Instead, they will just continue to generate electricity by combustion of fossil fuels, which is cheaper.

Yet there is a point of view that suggests the richer countries can provide capital to support the poorer countries to develop renewable energy. In fact, the USA, which is a more developed country, has left the United Nations Climate Change Conference after Donald Trump has become the president of the USA. He thinks that the USA does not have any responsibilities to halt climate change by using more non-polluting energy instead of just burning fossil fuels. Not to mention he will financially support the less developed countries to generate green energy.

In conclusion, although we all know that renewable energy is more environmental friendly than burning fossil fuels, combustion of fossil fuels will still be the main way to generate electricity for all of us. Undoubtedly, it is difficult for every nations in the globe changing to use green energy and eliminating fossil fuels.

My feelings

I feel quite comfortable and relax in these couple of days. I have arrived in Liverpool for half a month. I can do whatever I want here without any restrictions. Besides, I have learnt a lot of knowledge from physics, Chemistry and biology in this week, which are very interesting. However, on Tuesday and Thursday, I need to have social science lessons. Social science is definitely not my interest and lessons in social science are quite boring for me. The stuff that I have learnt in social science lessons are very tedious.  I almost fell asleep is both lessons. I hope that I can find something interesting in social science lessons in next week.

My feelings

I have arrived in Liverpool for a week, and I feel quite exciting in this week. I have had my lessons since last Friday. I feel very exciting as everything here is new to me, including study and living environment, students and lecturers. I need to explore everything in a new environment. Besides, I have met some new friends in my accommodation and college, most of them are overseas students, like me!

Mid-Autumn Festival

Hong Kong, despite being an international city, has still conserved many traditions. In autumn, there is one tradition which is quite unique in Chinese society. It's the Mid-Autumn Festival! On that day, Hongkongers have dinner with all of their family members. This represents reunion. Besides, they eat mooncakes and starfruits in this festival. These food, especially mooncakes, are symbolic of Mid-Autumn Festival. Mooncakes can only be bought in bakeries on or before the festival. Thus, it is impossible for us to have mooncakes in other months. Also, kids usually buy paper lanterns and use candles to light up the lanterns on Mid-Autumn Festival for fun!

Nowadays, with the adventment of a variety of lanterns, for instance, using cartoon characters to make a lantern, kids can have much more choices to choose from for celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival. Moreover, many Hongkongers usually buy fluorescent sticks for fun during the festival. For example, they use these sticks to make a ball to kick during the night of the festival. However, despite a lot of fun, this causes serious environmental problems due to the disposal of tonnes of fluorescent sticks to the landfill after the festival.
